Assignment, Week 9: Sports
This week's assignment is to try covering a sports/action game or event. Pay attention to light direction and background,
and try to capture the struggle of the sport.
The following night/indoor games are going on at Berkeley (according to the calbears website) -
as Berkeley students you can attend all the games for free (except football and basketball) - bring your camera and start snapping away (there's a good chance there'll
be Daily Cal, Golden Bear Sports, or other shooters as well, so don't worry about being the weirdo taking pictures of all the players).
- November 11, 2009 2pm Spieker Pool - Men's Swimming
- November 11, 2009 8pm Haas Pavilion - Men's Basketball
- November 13, 2009 7pm Haas Pavilion - Women's Volleyball (some people have had some trouble shooting volleyball)
- November 14, 2009 10:30am Spieker Pool - Men's Water Polo
- November 15, 2009 9am Sports Basement, Presidio SF - Rival 10K run
- November 15, 2009 12:30pm Haas Pavilion - Women's Volleyball
- November 15, 2009 5pm Haas Pavilion - Women's Basketball
There are also intramural sports or pickup games going on at Maxwell Field (next to Bowles Hall) or
at Underhill between Units 1 and 2. Action sports such as skateboarding or biking may be suitable as well, if you can
find a location (maybe a local skate park?)
You can find schedules for intramural sports here: http://calbears.imtrackonline.com/im/client/home
Assignment summary
- Shoot a sports game or other fast-action type event
- Experiment with shooting from different vantage points, with respect to player position, lighting direction, and background
- Utilize high ISO, large aperture, or even underexpose and brigthen later with software - whatever it takes to achieve a fast enough shutter speed. Often 1/500s can freeze running motion, though other
moving subjects (tennis racket, baseball bat, feet of runners, arms of throwers can still be blurry even at high 1/1000s speeds).
