Assignment, Week 11: Sports

Theme: Gladiators

This week we'll be focusing on sports photography. Keeping in mind the tips from guest speaker Kelley Cox (also check back in a few days for her presentation).

Action - look for interaction, struggle
Know the sport - how it's played, where the action will be
Keep the sun in mind - where it's coming from and where it's casting shadows
Use fast shutter speeds to freeze motion - use high ISO
Try to get clean backgrounds
Focus is critical!
Pay attention to what's going on outside of the ball - sidelines, fans, players outside of the action
Pay attention to faces, and especially look for good expression/emotion
Shoot from low angles - creates cleaner backgrounders, makes players look more imposing

There are a lot of sports games going on on campus throughout the week, and all of them (except for Men's Basketball and Men's football) are free for Berkeley students (just bring your ID). Most places are also pretty easy-going, so don't be afraid to walk around on the sidelines/get closer to the action. There are also intramural sports, or any kind of other sporting event you might attend.

Fri 04/11/08 3pm: Women's softball vs. Oregon
Fri 04/11/08 1:30pm: Men's tennis vs. Oregon
Sat 04/12/08 1pm: Women's softball vs. Oregon State
Sat 04/12/08 1pm: Men's tennis vs. Washington
Sat 04/12/08 all day: Track & Field vs. Stanford (Big Meet)
Sat 04/12/08 7pm: Women's water polo vs. Cal State Bakersfield
Sun 04/13/08 12pm: Women's softball vs. Oregon State
