UPDATE - 2008 October 2
- Week 4 lecture slides are now up, as is the week 4 quiz on bspace
- Today I mentioned that the ideal camera would have a moderate number of pixels in order to have better noise performance -
so if I were an engineer designing a new camera, I'd build one with an 8MP sensor instead of a 20MP one. However, this doesn't
mean that you should all run out and snap up those antique old 2 and 3MP cameras. Noise performance will likely be much worse with
those cameras, even if they have less pixels (and more light-collecting area per pixel).
While it's true that older cameras will have larger photodiodes and collect more light, this only gives them less SHOT NOISE,
which is what we talked about today and only depends on the amount of light received. I also mentioned READ NOISE, which is caused by
the sensor/camera itself - today's image sensors have much better control over read noise than older digital cameras, and this is what
makes them better performers at high-ISO, in spite of having more pixels and less light per pixel.
UPDATE - 2008 September 29
- Week 3 lecture slides are now up. The week 3 quiz is now also posted on bspace.
UPDATE - 2008 September 25
- Sorry everyone, class was cancelled for today. There is a classroom reservation issue that I need to sort out - I'll send you an email tomorrow hopefully with details on next week's lecture (it *should* stay in the same room, but a change is possible).
- Photo review discussion sections *will* meet for Monday. I'll be presenting the lecture material that was supposed to be presented on Thursday, so be there.
- Quiz has been posted up on bspace, and homework assignments can be found on the lessons page. Both the quiz and homeworks will be due a week later (quiz due the second lecture from now, on Thurs. Oct. 9, both homeworks due Mon. Oct 6).
UPDATE - 2008 September 22
- Week 2 assignment is up here: assignment_advanced_week02_lowlight.php
- The presentation from week 2 was actually posted up a few days ago, and can be found here: lessons page
- I've started up a photography blog, which you can find on the link to the left. It'll cover photo news as well as some advanced topics that we probably won't cover in class. The first post is some news and analysis on a few of the new products and announcements at the Photokina 2008 trade show going on right now.
UPDATE - 2008 September 14
- The bspace website has been set up, and you can log into it by going to bspace.berkeley.edu
- Emails were sent out about bspace - if you didn't get an email and the Digital Photo Decal site doesn't show up when you log in to bspace, please send me an email
- The first quiz has been posted up on bspace, reviewing last lecture's material. It's an optional quiz for extra credit points

UPDATE - 2008 August 3
- I am actively looking for anyone who's interested in co-facilitating the decal. If you think you already know a bit about photography, and want to give a hand at leading the photo reviews rather than just sitting in on them, let me know via email (nathanyan@berkeley.edu)
- Please see the course description at courseinfo.php
- I've posted up a preliminary schedule for all three sections - check it out at schedule.php. If you've got any suggestions or request, feel free to let me know.
